Sheet Metal Forming Theory

Sheet metal forming, which is often referred to as stamping, is a process in which a piece of sheet metal, referred to as the blank, is formed by stretching between a punch and a die.

Sheet metal forming represents an extensive research area involving numerous topics such as finite element techniques and modeling, material models, material characterization, formability, component and full-scale test methods as well as a variety of industrial processes and technologies. There are many different metals that can be made into sheet metal, such as aluminium, brass, copper, steel, tin, nickel and titanium. For decorative uses, important sheet metals include silver, gold, and platinum.Sheet metal is used in automobile and truck (lorry) bodies, airplane fuselages and wings, medical tables, roofs for buildings (architecture) and many other applications.

Sheet metal manufacturing is mainly completed on the stamping parts, the parts are formed between two molds.Sometimes, sheet metal parts are referenced to as stamping parts.Parts are usually economical and easy to mass production.Generally speaking, the thickness of metal sheet is basically unchanged, or negligible change. For some processes, such as deep drawing, the thickness varies slightly, but in most cases it may also be neglected .Sheet metal parts usually have high strength, good surface and accurate tolerances.
