Application of PVD Surface Finishing in Prototyping

What is PVD?

PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) is a process in which metal material is vaporized in a vacuum and deposited onto the surface of a workpiece, forming a functional coating with very strong adhesion.

Why is PVD Suitable for Prototypes?

1. Closer to a mass-production appearance

PVD creates a smooth, uniform surface with a premium look. It is ideal for industrial design samples and high-end appearance prototypes.

2. Improved wear and scratch resistance

PVD coatings are very hard, which significantly improves wear resistance and scratch protection.

Limitations of PVD

While PVD improves surface performance, it also has some drawbacks:

• High cost

• Long processing time

• High material requirements that withstand high temperatures

• High demands on surface finishing preparation

Due to these limitations, small-area sample testing is recommended first.

 Applications of PVD

•  Consumer electronics: earphone housings, smart wearable devices, etc., to accurately present industrial design intent.

Automotive interiors: dashboards, trim parts, knobs, meeting automotive-grade visual and tactile requirements.

Medical devices: housings and control interfaces for demanding application environments.

Common PVD colors include black titanium, gunmetal, dark gray, and gold, all with a strong metallic appearance.
